Numismatik

Geschichtswissenschaften – Zweite erweiterte Auflage des kuriosen numismatischen Werks. - ADB XVII, 377. - Lipsius-Leitzm. I, 215.

History – Numismatics. - Second, enlarged edition of the curious numismatic work, with 67 numismatic illustrations on 5 folding copper engraved plates. Attractively bound in contemporary half vellum. - ADB XVII, 377. - Lipsius-Leitzm. I, 215. - Hirsch-Hübötter III, 632. - The German naturalist and physician Johann Christian Kundmann (1684-1751) founded a renowned natural history cabinet, which he described in a printed and illustrated catalogue in 1737. He assembled a significant coin collection and published several numismatic books based on his own collection and natural history topics, including "Examen fossilium et lapidum quorundam rariorum" and "Promptuarium rerum naturalium et artificialium vratislaviense". - In this work, Kundmann examines coins with special characteristics or associations that are valued by collectors, including "wedding thalers," "Indians," "magic coins," "spell pennies," "emergency coins," "paper coins," "Polish murder thalers," "rebel thalers," etc. - Provenance: Christian Jakob August Freiherr von Berstett (1773-1860), with his typographic bookplate mounted on a strip of paper on the front cover. - Title page verso with older, illegible owner's stamp, book block trimmed while leaving a still wider margin, however resulting in the loss of a previous owner's inscription, slightly browned throughout, otherwise a well-preserved copy of the curious item.
