Lot 345 Erasmus (d.i. Erasmus von Finx) Francisci. Der Wunder-reiche Überzug …

Der Wunder-reiche Überzug unserer Nider-Welt, oder Erd-umgebende Lufft-Kreys (...) Mit gestochenem Frontispiz von C. N. Schurtz und 27 (wovon 1 gefaltete) gestochene Tafeln von C. N. Schurtz (4), J. A. Böner (12) und 11 unsigniert. Nürnberg, Endter, 1670. 9 Bl. (Tit. in rot und schwarz, Widm., Vorw., Inhaltsverz.), 1450 S., 15 Bl. (Reg., Errata). Pgt. d. Zt. mit span. Ktn. u. kalligr.

- Blatt 651/652 (Bl. Nnnnii) mit textbeschädigender kleiner Fehlstelle, vier Bl. mit Beschnitt ohne Textverlust in der oberen rechten Ecke neu beschnitten, Titelei in den Rändern stw. gering fingerfleckig, sonst innen vortreffliches Exemplar.

History – Francisci's instructing and at the same time most curious baroque treatise on meteorological phenomena, strikingly illustrated with an engraved frontispiece and 27 (of which 1 is folding) engraved plates. - For references see above. - Treatise on bizarre natural phenomena and wonders, written in the form of 23 discourses, illustrated with some unusual plates, several of which depict "extreme weather": raining rats, eels and frogs, the effects of a tornado, floods, a burning city, ships in the sky, huge waves at sea and a naked couple climbing on goats. "This is Francisci's most scientific work. Clouds, rain, snow, winds, storms, tempests, and thunder are described largely based on factual accounts. On pages 29-31, there is a dialogue between Faust and Mephistopheles about the location of Paradise, the Tree of Knowledge, the Fall of Man, and the rivers of the Garden of Eden" (Faber du Faur). - The allegorical frontispiece features a Cyclop, in mythology the smith of Zeus's lightning bolts, at its center. - Pp. 651/652 (fol. Nnnnii) have a small tear affecting the text, our leaves have been re-trimmed without loss of text in the upper right corner, the title page has some minor finger-stains in the margins, otherwise, the interior is in superb condition.
