Nürnberg

Literatur des 17. bis 19. Jahrhunderts – Erste Ausgabe von Helwigs Pastorale über Nürnberg. - VD17 23:000458D. - Wolfskehl 191. - Goedeke III, 112, 58, 2. - Faber du Faur 556. ("A typical Schäfferey").

Literature of 17th to 19th Century – First edition of Helwig's Pastoral on Nuremberg. Bound in contemporary vellum with hand-written spine title and spanish flaps. - For references see above. - A pastoral poem about the history of Nuremberg by Johann Helwig (also Hellwig, 1609-74), a physician and poet who worked as a hospital doctor there, illustrated with a pastoral scene (frontispiece) and 3 informative heraldic plates. Nuremberg's famous families and the Pegnesian Flower Order, which Helwig joined in 1645 under the name "Montano," are discussed (in literary terms). The text is enriched by poems by Harsdörffer and Klaj. - The illustrated poems, which create various motifs through verse length and layout, are entirely in keeping with the taste of the time: house, vase, crown, fountain, butterfly, etc. The partially etched, burred copperplate engravings depict a Baroque triumphal arch, an idyllically situated temple of the Muses, and the coats of arms of Nuremberg patrician families. - The engraved title on the verso bears an old biographical note about the author, mentioning his membership in the Pegnesian Flower Order. - Evenly lightly browned, otherwise an exceptionally well preserved copy indeed.
