Buchwesen – Sammlung dreier buchhistorisch bedeutsamer Sotheby's Kataloge zur Auktionierung der Sammlung von G. Libri, dem wohl berühmtesten Bücherdieb des 19. Jh. - Enthält über 2000 in drei Auktionen in den Jahren 1859, 1862 und 1864 angebotene Positionen, deren wertvollste auch auf 52 lithographierten Tafeln abgebildet sind. - Der vor allem in Frankreich wirkende italienische Mathematiker Guglielmo Libri (1803-1869), nomen omen est, stahl in seiner langen Karriere als Bibliomane, sowohl in seinem Heimatland, vor allem aber als Sekretär der Kommission für den Gesamthandschriftenkatalog der öffentlichen Bibliotheken Frankreichs tausende Handschriften aus dem 6. bis 16. Jahrhundert, eine Abschrift des Kolumbusbriefs, Shakespeare-Quartausgaben sowie Handschriften von Galilei, Kepler und Leibniz etc. Lange Zeit als Prominenter von einflußreichen Politiker gedeckt, musste Libri im Zuge der Februarrevolution 1848 nach England fliehen, nicht ohne davor die wertvollsten Manuskripte und Bücher seiner Sammlung über den Kanal schiffen zu lassen. 1850 sollte er in Paris in absentia verurteilt werden. Tausende der von Libri entwendeten Handschriften, darunter zahlreiche in den vorliegenden Auktionen angebotene, wurden in den 1880er-Jahren wieder nach Italien (Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana) und Frankreich (Bibliothèque Nationale) restituiert. Ein Nebenprodukt der Diebstähle Libris ist die in großem Stil organisierte Rückführung der Manessischen Liederhandschrift nach Heidelberg, die bekanntlich im Dreißigjährigen Krieg nach Frankreich gelangt war. Der Verlagsbuchhändler K. Trübner kaufte 166 französische Handschriften aus dem Bestand Libris und tauschte diese mit der Bibliothèque National gegen den Codex Manesse. - Provenienz: Dr. Moritz Grolig (1873-1949), österreichischer Bibliothekar, Bibliograph und Buchhistoriker, mit dessen photographischen Exlibris auf dem vorderen Einbanddeckel, Monogrammstempel auf dem 2. Bl. verso und letzter Taf. verso, sowie dessen persönlichen Anmerkungen, Korrekturen und Notizen, ausserdem auf dem Vortitelblatt recto zum Erwerb, wonach Grolig das Konvolut der Kataloge am 24. Oktober 1907 in Paris vom französischen Antiquar Lucien Gougy (1863-1931) angekauft hatte. Der Katalog von 1859 wurde von Grolig nach dem Exemplar der Universitätsbibliothek Wien mit den Auktionsergebnissen vervollständigt (sh. Groligs Anmerkung auf der ersten Seite des Katalogs). - Einige Blätter vor allem des dritten Katalogs in den Aussenstegen mit Randbräunung und etw. brüchig, durchgehend leicht gebräunt, sonst gut erhaltenes Zeugnis von unmäßiger Bibliophilie, -manie, ja -phagie!

Books on Books, History of Paper and Typography – Collection of three historically significant Sotheby's catalogues for promoting the it's sales of the collection of G. Libri, probably the most famous book thief of the 19th century. - Contains over 2000 items offered in 3 consecutive auctions in the years 1859, 1862 and 1864, the most valuable of which are also illustrated on 52 lithographed plates. The Italian mathematician Guglielmo Libri (1803-1869), nomen omen est, worked primarily in France. During his long career as a bibliophile, he stole thousands of manuscripts from the 6th to the 16th centuries, a copy of Columbus's letter, quarto editions of Shakespeare, and manuscripts by Galileo, Kepler, Leibniz, and others, both in his homeland and especially as secretary of the commission for the catalogue of manuscripts in French public libraries. Long protected and sheltered by influential politicians, Libri was forced to flee to England during the February Revolution of 1848, but not before shipping the most valuable manuscripts and books from his collection across the Channel. In 1850 he was eventually sentenced in Paris in absentia. Thousands of the manuscripts stolen by Libri, including many offered in the auctions documented here, were restituted to Italy (Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana) and France (Bibliothèque Nationale) in the 1880s. - Provenance: Dr. Moritz Grolig (1873-1949), Austrian librarian, bibliographer and book historian, with his photographic bookplate on the front cover, monogram stamp on the second leaf verso and last plate verso, as well as his personal annotations, corrections, and notes, also on the front endpaper recto, indicating that Grolig purchased the collection of catalogues in Paris on October 24, 1907, from the French antiquarian bookseller Lucien Gougy (1863-1931). The 1859 catalogue was supplemented by Grolig with the auction results from the copy held by the University Library of Vienna (see Grolig's note on the first page of the catalogue). - Some pages, especially from the third catalogue, with browning at the edges and somewhat brittle, lightly browned throughout, otherwise a well-preserved testament to immoderate bibliophilia, -mania, even -phagia!
