Italien - Venetien

Geography and Travel – Italy. - First edition of this richly illustrated work on the Venetian nobility, featuring well over 200 coats of arms and insignia on 52 copper engraved and partly etched plates. Bound in a neat later full calf binding in contemporary style. - Cicogna 2218. - Illustrious work by the French Benedictine Casimir Freschot (c. 1640-1720), who worked as a historian, teacher and probably also as an envoy. He published numerous works, including several subjective travelogues dealing with the political and social conditions of European courts, cities and states, which could serve as preparation for or a substitute for grand tours. - In the same year, another edition of this work was published by Hertz, also in Venice. - Our copy is not, as usual, double-numbered between pp. 336-43. - Some plates loose, pp. 255-8 with scribbles in brown ink in the footer, some leaves slightly stained at the edges. The second of the white leaves at the end has more moisture stains, the margins generally are slightly browned, and the cut is somewhat dusty. Overall, a well-preserved print with strong copper engravings, burred in the etched areas. Our copy is untrimmed, the firm mould paper therefore with full deckled edges.
