Geographie
Geography and Travel – Richly illustrated manual on geography, at the same time the first pocket world atlas published in Austria, featuring 37 hand-coloured copper engraved maps by Johann Jakob Lidl, some of which with additional etching. - For references see above. - Rare in trade, even individual maps are not common. For us only four other complete copies traceable at auction in the last 20 years. - With accurately engraved and neatly coloured maps of America, Africa and Asia in overview, as well as detailed maps of all parts of Europe and some parts of Asia. Cartographically, the map of America features a large, blank northwestern coast labeled parts unknown with a spurious lake at center. There is no inland detail with the exception of Santa Fe being located. The map of Africa shows two lakes (Zaire and Zaflan) in central Africa as the source of the Nile River and the Mountains of the Moon are shown just to their south. - Compiled by the Jesuit Franz Wagner (1675-1738), who worked in Vienna, was an imperial historiographer and educator. - Title page of part 2 bound in as pp. 73/74. - Old owner's remarks with ink on front paste-down and title page (located: Saarlouis). - Some maps misbound, some mispagination, front fly-leaf missing. Slightly foxed in places, several layers and plates more heavily browned, some of the maps with tears at the protruding edges. Overall, a solid copy of this rarity, the maps in strong, partly shining colours.
