Und: 29 Einlagebogen gestrichenen Papiers handschriftlich betitelt "Madagascar 1896-1909" mit 69 einseitig in Schlitzen eingeschobenen Original-Photographien (Silbergelatine-, Silberbromid- und Albumin-Abzüge) auf verschiedenen Papieren, alle mit handschriftlichen, meist datierten Legenden unter den Einlagen. Ca. 1896-1909. 8°. OHLn. die Vorderumschläge je betitelt "Madagascar" und mit montiertem Monogramm "J L", die Rücken nummiert mit "A" und "B" und 2° (Bogen) mit Photos: 19 x 24,5 - 9 x 12 cm (Rücken der Heftumschläge mit kleinen Einrissen, berieben, der Titelbogen mit Einrissen und etw. fingerfleckig).

Geographie und Reisen – Einzigartige Sammlung von zwei Notizbüchern samt Ephemera, beinhaltend bedeutende Berichte über Aufenthalt und Arbeit im Norden Madagaskars, dazu seltene Photographien. - Aus dem Nachlass von Dr. Jean Logerais, dem für das Krankenhaus in Mahajanga zuständigen Kolonialbeamten. - Die Notizbücher mit in den 1910er-Jahren angefertigten Kopien von 52 zwischen 1904 und 1906 auf der Reise und in Madagaskar verfassten Briefen von Logerais' Frau Juliette an ihre Mutter, hauptsächlich mit anschaulichen Beschreibungen des medizinischen Dienstes und dem Leben der französischen Oberschicht. - Der Haupttext ergänzt durch eingeklebte bzw. beiliegende handschriftliche oder gedruckte Ephemera, z.B. eine Tuschezeichnung im Text mit Grundriss des Krankenhauses, eine kleine Karte von Madagaskar, die Bleistiftzeichnung einer jungen madagassischen Frau (von vorne und von hinten), Programme von zwei Theateraufführungen in Mahajanga (wovon eine Amateuraufführung mit Mme. Logerais), ein kurzer Aufsatz über die Landwirtschaft in Madagaskar etc. - Die 69 Photos (46 in der Größe von ca. 19 x 24,5 cm, 16 mit ca. 12 x 17 cm und 7 mit ca. 9x 12 cm) zeigen u.a. die Stadt Mahajanga und deren Umgebung, darunter Gesamtansichten aus der Vogelperspektive, detailreiche Großansichten und Panoramen vom Meer aus mit dem Kai, teils mit Szenerien des Hafenlebens, weiters Straßen, Plätzen und Gebäude, sowie die Insel Nosy Be. Ausserdem mit Porträts der Königin von Ankatsepe und ihrer Hofdamen, drei Häuptlingen von den Komoren, dem Volk der Sakalava und weiteren Eingeborenen, sowie französischen Offizieren. - Einige Abzüge etw. ausgesilbert, verblasst oder gebräunt. - Insgesamt historisch wichtige Sammlung von Originalmaterialien und überwiegend scharfen, kontrastreichen Photos über Nordmadagaskar kurz nach seiner Kolonialisierung durch Frankreich (1897).

Geography and Travel – Asia - Madagascar. - Marvellous collection of two notebooks and ephemera within, containing historically important reports on residence and work by French colonial officals in northern Madagascar, accompanied by 69 rare photographs (silver gelatin, silver bromide and albumin prints). - From the estate of Dr Jean Logerais, the responsible for the hospital in Mahajanga. - The notebooks contain copies from the 1910s of 52 letters written by Logerais' wife Juliette to her mother between 1904 and 1906 while travelling and in Madagascar, mainly with vivid descriptions of medical services and the life of the French upper class. - The main text is supplemented by tipped-in or enclosed hand-written or printed ephemera, e.g. an ink drawing in the text with a floor plan of the hospital, a small map of Madagascar, a pencil drawing of a young Madagascan woman (from the front and from behind), programmes of two theatre performances in Mahajanga (one of which is an amateur performance with Mme. Logerais hereself), a short essay on agriculture in Madagascar, etc. - The 69 photographs (46 measuring approx. 19 x 24.5 cm, 16 measuring approx. 12 x 17 cm and 7 measuring approx. 9 x 12 cm) show, among other things, the city of Mahajanga and its surroundings, including bird's-eye views, detailed large-scale views and panoramas from the sea with the quay, some with scenes of harbour life, as well as streets, squares and buildings, and the island of Nosy Be. Also included are portraits of the Queen of Ankatsepe and her ladies-in-waiting, three chiefs from the Comoros, the Sakalava people and other natives, as well as French officers. Some prints are slightly silvered, faded or browned. - Overall, a historically important collection of original materials about northern Madagascar with sharp and contrast-rich photographs shortly after its colonisation by France (1897).
