RTit. auf Ldr.-Schild in zweiten von fünf mittels Fileten gegliederten Fächern, goldgepr. DTit. und umseitigen Rotschnitt, die Decken überzogen mit geädertem Kleisterpapier mit Verdrängungsdekor (Fehlstelle an der oberen Kapitale, Vordergelenk angebrochen, etw. beschabt).

Telegraphie

Technik – Seltenes Pionierwerk der Telegraphie, für uns in den letzten 20 Jahren auf Auktionen nur zwei weitere Male nachweisbar. - Poggendorff I, 152. - ADB II, 398. - Nicht in Roberts/Trent. - Drittes, letztes, in Text und Abbildungen wesentlich erweitertes Werk über optische Telegraphie des Hanauer Naturforschers Johann Andreas Benignus Bergsträsser (1732-1812). Des Verfassers detaillierte Ausführungen können auch als Entgegnung zu Claude Chappe (1762-1805) gelesen werden, der im Jahr 1791 in Frankreich den "Tachygraf" (Schnellschreiber) entwickelt und empirisch erprobt hatte, womit er die Erfindung des optischen Telegraphen für sich in Anspruch nahm. - "B. versucht sein Telegraphensystem am 11. 6. 1786 zwischen dem Feldberg, Homburg v.d. Höhe und Philippsruhe (...)" (Feldhaus, Ruhmesblätter der Technik II, S. 76f.) Die vorliegende Arbeit bietet einen Überblick über Telekommunikationsmethoden von der Antike bis zum Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts. Sie beschreibt und illustriert verschiedene Systeme der optischen Telegrafie, darunter Verschlusstelegrafen, Semaphore, Spiegeltelegrafen, Systeme mit Alphabet und/oder Ziffern, Chappes Pendeltelegraf, die Telegrafensysteme von Achard und Buschendorff usw. Auch das Problem der Informationskodierung wird angesprochen. (Vgl. Holzmann & Pehrson, Early History of Data Networks, S. 42, 184-186.) - Provenienz: Königl. dänische Garnisons-Bibliothek, mit altem Stempel dieser Institution auf dem Titelblatt (gemäß den uns zugänglichen Provenienzdatenbanken unbedenklich). - Vorderspiegel- und -vorsatz mit kleinen älteren Besitzereinträgen, in den Rändern stellenweise gering finger- und schmutzfleckig, durchgehend gering gebräunt, insgesamt wohlerhalten.

Technique – Rare pioneering work on telegraphy, profusely illustrated with 16 partly also etched folding engraved plates. Bound in contemporary half-leather with gilt title on spine and front cover, boards covered with decorative paste paper. - For references see above. - Third and final work on optical telegraphy by the Hanau naturalist Johann Andreas Benignus Bergsträsser (1732-1812), significantly expanded in text and illustrations. The author's detailed explanations can also be read as a rebuttal to the Frenchman Claude Chappe (1762-1805), who in 1791 developed and empirically tested the "tachygraph" (speed writer), thereby claiming to have invented the optical telegraph. - "B. tested his telegraph system on June 11, 1786, between Feldberg, Homburg vor der Höhe, and Philippsruhe (...)" (Feldhaus, Ruhmesblätter der Technik II, pp. 76f.) - The present work is a survey of telecommunications methods from ancient times to the close of the eighteenth century. It describes various systems of optical telegraphy, including shutter telegraphs, semaphores, mirror telegraphs, systems using the alphabet and/or numerals, Chappe's pendulum telegraph, the telegraph systems of Achard and Buschendorff, etc. It also touches on the problem of information coding. (Cf. Holzmann & Pehrson Early History of Data Networks pp 42, 184-86.) - Provenance: Royal Danish Garrison Library, with the old stamp of this institution on the title page (according to the provenance databases available to us of unproblematic provenance). - Front paste-down and endpaper with small, older owner inscriptions, slightly finger-marked and soiled in places along the edges, slightly browned throughout, overall well preserved copy of this scarce work, for us verifiable at auctions only two other times in the last 20 years.
