Naturwissenschaften – Nissen ZBI 3465. - Junk, Rara S. 162 f. - Wood S. 541. - Sehr seltene dritte (und beste) Ausgabe (tatsächlich die zweite, im Text überarbeitete Ausgabe) dieser wichtigen Monographie über Frösche und Kröten, ein Meisterwerk der zoologischen Buchillustration des 18. Jahrhunderts, sowohl aus künstlerischer als auch aus wissenschaftlicher Sicht von großer Bedeutung. Von größter Seltenheit. Auf Grundlage verschiedener Fakten und Annahmen lässt sich grob schätzen, dass nicht mehr als 150 bis 200 Exemplare der Originalausgabe von 1758 (einschließlich der zweiten Ausgabe) hergestellt wurden. Die zweite Ausgabe verwendet diese Originalbogen mit einem neuen Titelblatt (Erstausgabe, zweite Auflage mit gestrichenem Titel). "Prof. F. Leydig schreibt, dass die Tafeln dieser neuen Ausgabe (die ich nicht gesehen habe), die in Inhalt und Anzahl mit denen des Originals übereinstimmen, deutlich besser seien als jene des Originals" (Junk, Rara). Prachtvoller Druck auf feinem Realleinenpapier. Die 24 Tafeln liegen, wie vom Verleger vorgesehen, jeweils doppelt vor. Eine Folge, im früheren Zustand ohne Ziffern oder Buchstaben, ist prachtvoll von Hand koloriert, die andere, im späteren Zustand mit hinzugefügten Ziffern und Buchstaben, aber mit getilgtem Namen Rösels, ist in Schwarz-Weiß ausgeführt. Rösel interessierte sich nicht nur für das rein morphologische Erscheinungsbild der Tiere, sondern auch für ihre Lebensweise. Sein Ziel war es, dem Ursprung eines Lebewesens auf den Grund zu gehen. Der Text enthält sehr ausführliche Beschreibungen und Diskussionen zur Fortpflanzung der Frösche, die von den Wissenschaftlern der Zeit unterschiedlich beurteilt wurde. Die Illustrationen, an denen neben Rösel sechs weitere Künstler beteiligt waren, gehören hinsichtlich der Genauigkeit der anatomischen Details zu den besten ihrer Art. Rösel schildert detailliert Fortpflanzung, Metamorphose vom Laich über die Kaulquappe bis zum ausgewachsenen Tier, Anatomie und Lebensweise der Frösche und Kröten und begründet damit eine neue, stark bildbasierte Phase der Herpetologie. Wegen der außergewöhnlichen Genauigkeit und künstlerischen Qualität der Tafeln wird die "Naturgeschichte der Frösche Deutschlands" bis heute als eines der schönsten und wissenschaftlich bedeutendsten Amphibienwerke des 18. Jahrhunderts angesehen. - Nur geringfügig stockfleckig und leicht fingerfleckig, insgesamt ein wohlerhaltenes Exemplar, auf festem Papier mit breiten Rändern gedruckt.

(Somewhat faded and a little rubbed.) Very rare third (and best) edition (in fact the second, with revised text) of this important monograph on frogs and toads, a masterpiece of 18th-century zoological book illustration and of great significance both artistically and scientifically. Of the greatest rarity. On the basis of various facts and assumptions, it can be roughly estimated that no more than 150 to 200 copies of the original 1758 edition (including the second edition) were produced. The second edition uses these original sheets with a new title-page (first edition, second issue with cancel title). "Prof. F. Leydig writes that the plates of this new edition (which I have not seen), which are identical in content and number to those of the original, are significantly better than those of the latter" (Junk, Rara). Magnificent printing on fine laid paper. The 24 plates are, as intended by the publisher, each present twice. One suite, in the earlier state without numbers or letters, is splendidly hand-coloured, the other, in the later state with added numbers and letters but with Rösel's name removed, is in black and white. Rösel was interested not only in the purely morphological appearance of the animals but also in their way of life. His aim was to get to the bottom of a creature's origins. The text contains very detailed descriptions and discussions of the reproduction of frogs, which was assessed differently by the scientists of the time. The illustrations, in which six other artists besides Rösel were involved, are among the finest of their kind in terms of the accuracy of anatomical detail. Rösel gives a detailed account of the reproduction, metamorphosis from spawn through tadpole to the fully grown animal, anatomy and way of life of frogs and toads, thereby inaugurating a new, strongly image-based phase in herpetology. Owing to the exceptional accuracy and artistic quality of the plates, the "Naturgeschichte der Frösche Deutschlands" is still regarded as one of the most beautiful and scientifically important works on amphibians of the 18th century. - Only very slightly foxed and with minor finger-soiling, overall a well-preserved copy, printed on strong paper with wide margins.
