Das Werk beschreibt systematisch die im Gebiet vorkommenden Arten, behandelt sowohl lebende als auch fossile Formen und dokumentiert damit die lokale Biodiversität und das fossile Vorkommen dieser Gruppen in außergewöhnlicher Dichte. Dupuy liefert morphologische Diagnosen, Angaben zu Verbreitung und Lebensräumen und verknüpft die lebende Malakofauna mit den entsprechenden Schalen aus den Ablagerungen der Region, was dem Buch auch geologisch-paläontologische Bedeutung verleiht. Der Essai bildet zugleich die Grundlage für Dupuy's späteres größeres Werk zur französischen Malakologie und gilt als eines der frühen, sorgfältig gearbeiteten faunistischen Standardwerke zur Land- und Süßwassermolluskenfauna Frankreichs. - Abbé Dominique Dupuy (1812-1885) war ein französischer Geistlicher, Botaniker und Malakologe aus Lectoure im Département Gers. Er wirkte als Professor für Naturgeschichte am kleinen Seminar in Auch und lehrte zuvor Mathematik und Naturgeschichte in Gimont. Dupuy war Mitglied mehrerer gelehrter Gesellschaften, darunter der Société Botanique de France und der Société d'Histoire Naturelle de Toulouse - Wohlerhalten. Gutes Exemplar.
