Horn - Schenkling 24325. - Erstausgabe des berühmten naturkundlichen Atlas des Nürnberger Ornithologen und Pädagogen Johann Wolf (1765-1824), ein zweiter Druck erschien 1827. Das Buch könnte an Johann Friedrich Blumenbachs "Abbildungen naturhistorischer Gegenstände" von 1796 anknüpfen. Die Stiche, größtenteils von Bock nach Gabler, zeigen Vögel, Fische, Insekten, Säugetiere, Amphibien usw. In ihrer mittlerweile klassischen Studie über den wissenschaftlichen Atlas stellen Lorraine Daston und Peter Galison fest, dass "die starke Verbindung zwischen dem Visuellen und dem Faktischen Atlanten zu Hauptträgern der neuen Objektivität machte", und analysieren die zunehmende Selbstkontrolle seitens der Wissenschaftler, wahrheitsgetreu darzustellen und subjektive Interpretationen zu vermeiden. Gemäß ihrer Geschichte der Darstellungsweisen sollte Wolfs Buch als Beispiel für den "charakteristischen" Atlas des 18. Jahrhunderts eingestuft werden, in dem "ein einzelnes Objekt (anstelle eines imaginären Komposits oder korrigierten Ideals) dargestellt wird und für eine ganze Klasse ähnlicher Objekte steht". - Der Text teilweise auf bläulichem Papier gedruckt. Etwas stockfleckig, unbeschnittenes Exemplar in den seltenen typografischen Umschlägen des Verlegers. Titel von Band I in Heft XII eingebunden, Titel von Band II nicht in das Heft eingebunden. Heft XI von Band II mit der Mitteilung an die Abonnenten: "Nachricht an die respektablen Abnehmer".

Natural Sciences – Zoology. - With 72 coloured engraved plates. - First edition of the famous natural history atlas by the Nuremberg ornithologist and educator Johann Wolf (1765-1824), a second printing was published in 1827. The book may have been inspired by Johann Friedrich Blumenbach's *Abbildungen naturhistorischer Gegenstände* (Illustrations of Natural History Objects) from 1796. The engravings, mostly by Bock after Gabler, depict birds, fish, insects, mammals, amphibians, etc. In their now-classic study on the scientific atlas, Lorraine Daston and Peter Galison note that "the strong connection between the visual and the factual made atlases the primary vehicles of the new objectivity," and analyze the increasing self-discipline on the part of scientists to depict things truthfully and avoid subjective interpretations. According to their history of representational modes, Wolf's book should be classified as an example of the "characteristic" 18th-century atlas, in which "a single object (rather than an imaginary composite or corrected ideal) is depicted and stands for an entire class of similar objects." - The text is partially printed on bluish paper. Slightly foxed, uncut copy in the publisher's rare typographic covers. Title of Volume I bound into Book XII, title of Volume II not bound into the book. Book XI of Volume II contains the notice to subscribers: "Notice to the respectable subscribers."
