Zwei Werke. Affen. Aus: Naturhistorischer Atlas. Um 1830. Je handcolorierte Lithographie auf Velin. Je ca. 36 x 43 cm (62 x 48,5 cm). Mit der typographischen Bezeichnung auf lateinisch und deutsch sowie der systematischen Einordnung. Blätter je altersbedingt gebräunt, partiell etw. fleckig, an den Rändern bestoßen, hier vereinzelt mit Resten früherer Montierung und wenigen Stauchungen und Läsuren. Insgesamt gut. Prachtvolle, großformatige Drucke mit nuancierter, kreidiger Wirkung.

Nissen, Zoologische Buchillustration, Nr. 1617. - Die beiden fein ausgeführten Lithographien nach Aimé Henry verbinden präzise wissenschaftliche Beobachtung mit einer für die Zeit bemerkenswert differenzierten, malerischen Auffassung mit der besonderen Hinwendung zu Fellstruktur und Körpermodellierung. Dargestellt sind ein Colobus-Affe (Colobus polykomos) sowie ein Kleideraffe (Pygathrix nemaeus), deren Bezeichnung und systematische Einordnung noch der frühen Taxonomie nach Illiger folgt ("Quadrumana"). Die Blätter dokumentieren damit anschaulich den wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisstand vor der Etablierung moderner zoologischer Klassifikationssysteme.

Natural Sciences – Two plates. From: Natural History Atlas. Each a hand-coloured lithograph on vellum. With the typographical title in Latin and German, as well as the systematic classification. Sheets each age-browned, partially somewhat stained, bumped at the edges, here and there with remnants of earlier mounting and a few creases and glazes. Overall good. Magnificent, large-format prints with a nuanced, chalky effect. - These two finely executed lithographs after Aimé Henry combine precise scientific observation with a painterly approach that was remarkably sophisticated for its time, with a particular focus on fur texture and the modelling of the body. Depicted are a colobus monkey (Colobus polykomos) and a black-crested macaque (Pygathrix nemaeus), whose names and systematic classification still follow the early taxonomy of Illiger ("Quadrumana"). The prints thus vividly document the state of scientific knowledge prior to the establishment of modern zoological classification systems.
