Naturwissenschaften – Titelauflage der Erstausgabe von Aldrovandis üppig bebilderter Naturgeschichte als Kuriositätenkabinett. - Nissen, C. Zoologische Buchillustration, 74. - Catalogue of printed books in the Wellcome Historical Medical Library, Bd. I, 172 (für die Erstausgabe von 1642 als 12. v. 13 Tln. der "Opera omnia"). - Goldschmidt, Entwicklung und Bibliographie der pathologisch-anatomischen Abbildung, S. 43. - Für eine geplante, monumentale Enzyklopädie der Naturgeschichte hatte der Bologneser Professor für Medizin und Sammler Ulisse Aldrovandi (1522-1605) über Jahrzehnte insbesondere eine Füller an mannigfaltigem Bildmaterial zusammengetragen. Wie die meisten seiner Werke wurde auch die »Monstrorum historia« mit dem Zusatzwerk der "Paralipomena" erst posthum veröffentlicht, und zwar 1642 als 12. seiner auf 13 Bände angelegten "Opera omnia" in der Bearbeitung seines Schülers und Nachfolgers auf dem Lehrstuhl, Battista Ambrosini, der auch einen großen Teil des Textes schrieb. - Den besonderen Reiz des Werkes bildet die Fülle an fantastischen, oft kuriosen, ja bizarren Holzschnitten. Sie zeigen Baum- und Bartmensch, Mönchsfisch, Elephantenmensch, siamesische Zwillinge etc. - »Alles in allem eine riesige Kasuistik wahrer und erfundener menschlicher und tierischer Mißbildungen und Wunder in prachtvollen Holzschnitten«. (Goldschmidt) - Vorliegt die 1657 gedruckte unveränderte Titelauflage der "Monstrorum historia", mit dem von G. B. Coriolano mittels allegorischer Motivik auf architektonisch strukturiertem Grund prächtig radiertem Titelblatt der Erstausgabe, sowie die 2. Ausgabe der ergänzenden "Paralipomena". - Es fehlt Bl. I4 (Ss. 103/104) der "Paralipomena", mit den Darstellungen "Delphini ossicula" bzw. "Vituli marini". - Einband entlang der Gelenke stellenweise gebrochen, an den Kapitale mit kleinen Fehlstellen, an den Ecken bestoßen, die Decken gering berieben und mit kleinen Fehlstellen im Bezugsleder. Mehrere Blätter mit alt hinterlegten kleinen Fehlstellen, innen bis auf einige Seiten mit Bräunung sauber, die eindrucksvollen Holzschnitte großteils kräftig.

Natural Sciences – Zoology. - With 1 etched title leaf by G. B. Coriolano as well as title wood-cut vignette and printer's device, over 600, often full-page illustrations, as well as numerous wood-cut initials, head-pieces and vignettes. - Second imprint of the first edition of Aldrovandi's lavishly illustrated natural history, a stiking cabinet of curiosities. - The Bolognese professor of medicine and collector Ulisse Aldrovandi (1522-1605) had spent decades compiling a wealth of diverse pictorial material for a planned monumental encyclopaedia of natural history. Like most of his works, the 'Monstrorum historia' with the additional work of the 'Paralipomena' was only published posthumously in 1642 as 12th part of his 13 volume 'Opera omnia', edited by his pupil and successor in the chair, Battista Ambrosini, who also wrote a large part of the text. - The work's particular appeal lies in the abundance of fantastic, often curious, even bizarre woodcuts. They show "tree men" and "bearded men", "monk fish", "elephant men", Siamese twins etc. - 'All in all, a huge casuistry of true and invented human and animal deformities and wonders in magnificent woodcuts'. (Goldschmidt) - Present the unaltered second imprint of the 'Monstrorum historia' printed in 1657, with the magnificent title etching of the first edition by G. B. Coriolano using allegorical motifs on an architecturally structured ground, as well as the 2nd edition of the supplementary 'Paralipomena'. - Missing leaf I4 (pp. 103/104) of the "Paralipomena", with depictions of "Delphini ossicula" and "Vituli marini" retrospectively. - Binding in parts broken along the joints, small faults to the capitals, corners bumped, covers slightly worn and with small faults to the leather. Several leaves with backed minor faults, internally clean except for a few pages with browning, the impressive woodcuts mostly fresh and with strong constrast.
