Bawkunst Oder Architektur aller fürnemsten Nothwendigsten angehörigen Mathematischen und Mechanischen Künsten (...) zu rechtem Verstandt der Lehr Vitruvii in Drey fürnemme Büchern abgetheilet. Mit allegorischem Frontispiz (auf Bl. i verso), mehr als 160, teils blattgroßen Textholzschnitten sowie Druckermarke und mehrere Initialen im Holzschnitt. Basel, Heinrich Petri, 1582. Gr.4°. iiii (Tit., Widm. Vorw.), dlj (1, Druckermarke) S. Pgt. d. Zt. über 4 Bünden mit blindgepr. doppelter Filete auf den Decken (fleckig und berieben, mit hs. Jahreszahl, zum Schutz im neuen kartonierten Schuber).

Bln. 4688. - Vgl. Adams I, 986 u. BM STC, German Books S. 763 (für die Erstausg. v. 1547). - Verfasst vom Straßburger Humanisten Walther Hermann Ryff (um 1500-48), der Vitruvs klassische Baulehre gleichnjahrs als erster ins Deutsche übersetzt und zusätzlich kommentiert hatte, behandelt das Werk Perspektive, Geometrie und Architektur, aber auch nachbarliche, insbesondere militärischem Gebrauch dienliche Bereiche wie Büchsenmacherei, Ballistik, Artillerie, Festungsbau, Kriegs- und Meßkunst, sowie weiters Waagen und Gewichte. - Die Holzschnitte, u.a. P. Flötner, G. Pencz, V. Solis, H. Brosamer und E. Schön zugeschrieben, liegen nach der ersten Ausgabe von Ryffs "Baukunst" von 1547 vor und zeigen mathematische und geometrische Figuren, Grundrisse, Bauteile, Geschütze, Meßinstrumente u. v. a. Sie sind "mainly based on the 1521 Como edition (von Vitruvs Werk, Anm.), but many of the same plates were used in Ryff's Bawkunst (1582)" (Fowler). - Titelblatt in rot und schwarz mit einer kunstvollen, mittels Rankenwerk geschmückten Initiale. - Buchblock im unteren Drittel durchgehend wasserflecking und mitunter mit alten Sporflecken, mitunter etwas braun- und stockfleckig, Schnitt und teils Außensteg oben im letzten Drittel mit Spuren von Gallustinte, einige Bll. gering fettfleckig. Die Spiegel mit Tintenfleckchen (beide) und Besitzervermerk (verso).

Prints before 1600, Bibles, Classics in Original Languages – Third edition of Ryff's profusely illustrated work on art and architecture based on Vitruvius, with allegorical frontispiece, more than 160 woodcut illustrations, some full-page, as well as printer's device and several woodcut initials. Bound in contemporary vellum (soiled, but protected by a new slip-case). - For references see above. - Written by the Strasbourg humanist Walther Hermann Ryff (c. 1500-48), who was the first to translate and comment Vitruvius' classical treatise on architecture into German in the same year, the work deals with perspective, geometry and architecture, but also with related fields of particular military use, such as gunsmithing, ballistics, artillery, fortification, the art of war and measurement, as well as scales and weights. - The splendid wood-cuts, attributed to P. Flötner, G. Pencz, V. Solis, H. Brosamer and E. Schön, among others, are based on the first edition of present work from 1547 and show mathematical and geometric figures, floor plans, building components, artillery, measuring instruments and much more. They are 'mainly based on the 1521 Como edition (of Vitruv's work, note), but many of the same plates were used in Ryff's Bawkunst (1582)' (Fowler). - Title page in red and black with an ornamented initial decorated with tendrils. - Book block water-stained throughout and with some old foxing in the lower third and, in parts with some browning, edges and part of the outer margin at the top in the last third with traces of gallus ink, some leaves with slight grease. Paste-downs with ink spots (both) and owner's note (verso).
