Konkrete Kunst – Danilowitz 162. - Eines von 150 Exemplaren. - "Rare Echo" ist ein charakteristischer Siebdruck, der die intensive Beschäftigung des Künstlers mit den Wechselwirkungen von Farbe und Form exemplarisch vor Augen führt. Auf einem quadratischen Blatt sind vier übereinander geschichtete Quadrate in abgestuften Gelb- und Ockertönen angeordnet, die von außen nach innen zunehmend heller werden und eine subtile räumliche Tiefe erzeugen. Die Farbflächen sind dabei so exakt und homogen gedruckt, dass sie scheinbar mit dem Papier verschmelzen und so das eigentliche Sujet - die reine Farbe - in den Mittelpunkt stellen. Albers nutzte für seine druckgrafischen Arbeiten bevorzugt das Siebdruckverfahren, da es ihm erlaubte, Farben in maximaler Reinheit und Flächigkeit darzustellen; so konnte er sein zentrales Thema, nämlich das wechselseitige Beeinflussen von Farben im Auge des Betrachters, konsequent erforschen. Die Gestaltung steht damit in enger Beziehung zu seiner berühmten Serie "Hommage to the Square", mit der Albers Maßstäbe für die konkrete und konstruktive Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts setzte. In beiden Werkgruppen verzichtet Albers völlig auf narrative oder figürliche Elemente und experimentiert ausschließlich mit Farbbeziehungen, deren Wirkung durch die strenge Geometrie der Komposition und den makellosen Auftrag verstärkt wird. Exemplarisch für Albers' Ansatz ist das Ziel, den Sehprozess selbst ins Zentrum zu stellen: Die Farbfelder treten in einen Dialog mit dem Auge des Betrachters und lassen immer neue Variationen und Wahrnehmungen entstehen - eine Erfahrung, die Albers selbst als "actual act" bezeichnete, im Gegensatz zum "factual act" der fixen Bildanlage auf dem Papier. Somit fungiert "Rare Echo" im druckgrafischen Werk Albers' als herausragendes Beispiel für das Bestreben, Farbe als eigenständiges, dynamisches Medium und als Motor bildnerischer Erkenntnis erfahrbar zu machen.

Overall very good, with rich colours. - One of 150 copies. - 'Rare Echo' is a distinctive screen print that exemplifies the artist's intense preoccupation with the interplay of colour and form. Four squares in graduated shades of yellow and ochre are arranged on a square sheet, becoming progressively lighter from the outside in and creating a subtle spatial depth. The areas of colour are printed so precisely and homogeneously that they seem to merge with the paper, thus placing the actual subject - pure colour - at the centre of attention. Albers preferred to use screen printing for his printmaking work because it allowed him to represent colours with maximum purity and flatness; this enabled him to consistently explore his central theme, namely the mutual influence of colours in the eye of the beholder. The design is thus closely related to his famous series 'Homage to the Square,' with which Albers set standards for concrete and constructive art in the 20th century. In both groups of works, Albers completely dispenses with narrative or figurative elements and experiments exclusively with colour relationships, whose effect is enhanced by the strict geometry of the composition and the flawless application. Exemplary of Albers' approach is his goal of placing the visual process itself at the centre: the colour fields enter into a dialogue with the viewer's eye, giving rise to ever new variations and perceptions - an experience that Albers himself described as an 'actual act,' in contrast to the 'factual act' of the fixed image layout on paper. Thus, 'Rare Echo' serves as an outstanding example in Albers' printmaking oeuvre of his endeavour to make colour tangible as an independent, dynamic medium and as a motor for artistic insight.
