Passage du Jourdain, aus: Bible. 1956. Radierung auf Velin. 34,7 x 24,6 cm (44,7 x 33,2 cm). In der Platte signiert. - In Außenrändern, v.a. dem oberen, sehr leicht gebräunt, vereinzelt winziger Braunfleck, Papier im Oberrand ganz leicht gewellt, punktuelle leichte Griffspur, verso winzige Montierungsstreifen rechts, vereinzelt blasse Farbspur oder kleiner blasser Fleck, insgesamt gut. Ganz ausgezeichneter, herrlich gratiger Druck der mehrifgurigen Szenerie, mit deutlich eingeprägter Plattenkante und breitem Rand, an zwei Seiten mit dem Schöpfrand.

Klassische Moderne – Cramer 29, Vollard 242. - Sehr seltener Abzug des ersten Zustands vor jeglichen Überarbeitungen, mit Remarque und sichtbarer Plattenbearbeitung. - Blatt 44 der umfangreichen Bible-Folge. Gedruckt bei Maurice Potin, Paris 1956. - Beigegeben: Ders., Blatt der Auflage von 295 Exemplaren auf Montval. - Mit Trompetenklang überquert das Volk Israel den Jordan mit der mit den Zehn Geboten geschmückten Bundeslade, auf dem Weg ins Gelobte Land, begeht den Festmoment fröhlich feiernd. Chagall hält in skizzenhafter wenngleich lebendiger Manier den für das Volk derart identitätsbildenden Moment fest, herrlich sichtbar sind die Plattenmerkmale unseres Drucks mit Verwischungen der Ätzflüssigkeit der Radierung. Im Vergleich zum vorliegend beigegebenen Abzug der Auflage, erfolgt in diesem später der verstärkte Fokus auf die reich dekorierte Bundeslade mit den richtungsweisenden Zehn Geboten.

Classical Modernism – Etching on wove paper. Plate-signed. - Very slightly browned in outer margins, esp. on upper margin, isolated tiny brown-stain, paper slightly buckled at top, isolated slight grip trace, verso tiny traces from previous mounting on the right, isolated faint colour trace or small faint stain, all in all good. Very superb, wonderfully burr-likle impression of the multi-figured scenery with clearly impressed plate mark and wide margin, deckle edge on two sides. - Very rare copy of the first state before all reworked elements, with remarque and visible plate works. - Sheet 44 of the extentive portfolio "Bible". - Print by Maurice Potin, Paris 1956. - Added: Ibid., Print from the edition of 295 copies, on Montval wove paper.
