Er schrieb den dystopischen Roman nach einem Aufenthalt in den USA, wobei ihm vor allem auch der technische Fortschritt und das konsumorientierte Denken der US-Kultur beim Schreiben beeinflusste. Nachdem er 1937 nach Kalifornien gezogen war, begann seine erfolgreiche Drehbuch Autoren Karriere. Sein hierdurch erlangtes Vermögen setzte er während der NS-Zeit ein um Juden sowie linksgerichteten Schriftstellern und Künstlern bei der Flucht zu helfen. - Ränder gebräunt. Insgesamt gut erhalten.
