Alte Drucke, Bibeln, Klassische Autoren in den Originalsprachen – Den Bibliographen nicht bekannter Lyoneser Druck von Polydor Vergils vielbeachteter Abhandlung über Erfindungen und Erfinder, gleichzeitig die letzte nicht von der kathol. Zensur gereinigte Ausgabe. - Diese Ausgabe nicht im VD 16, nicht bei Adams, Brunet, Graesse, Ritter, und nicht bei Ferguson. - Des Italieners Polidoro Vergilio (1470-1555) im Geist des in der Renaissance aufkommenden Interesses für empirische, nicht von Gott abgeleitete Erkenntnis der Natur zuerst 1498 in Venedig erschienenes enzyklopädisches Werk über Erfindungen und Erfinder erreichte schon zu Lebzeiten des Verfassers zahlreiche Ausgaben und Übersetzungen (z.B. dt. "Von den erfyndern der dyngen", zuerst 1537). Vorliegender, bei Jean Frellon in Lyon erschienener Druck ist dennoch in den einschlägigen Bibliographien nicht nachweisbar, selbst bei Ferguson, der allein 28 lateinische Ausgaben vor 1560 aufzählt, ist sie nicht bekannt. - Aufgrund seines religionskritischen Ansatzes kam das Werk 1559 auf den ersten Römischen "Index" (Index Avctorvm, Et Libroru(m), qui ab Officio Sanctae Rom ..., 1559, fol. Pr.), weshalb voliegende die letzte unzensurierte Ausgabe darstellt. - Mit Marginalien und Unterstreichungen bzw. Vorderspiegel und Vorsatz recto mit Annotationen zweier alter Hände (wovon jene auf dem Vorsatz auf die Indizierung Bezug nimmt), Titelblatt mit drei hs. alten Besitzervermerken, davon einer gelöscht. Stellenweise leicht wasserrandig und vereinzelt mit kleinen Tintenflecken, auch im Schnitt, sonst ein solide erhaltenes Exemplar.

Prints before 1600, Bibles, Classics in Original Languages – A scarce Lyon impression of Polydor Vergil's highly regarded treatise on inventions and inventors, unknown to bibliographers and last not expurgated edition. - With wood-cut printer's mark on title page and 9 wood-cut initials filled with tendrils. - This edition is not listed in VD 16, Adams, Brunet, Graesse, Ritter, or Ferguson. - Reflecting the awakening interest in empirical and not theologically given knowledge during the Renaissance, present encyclopaedic work on inventions and inventors by the Italian scholar Polidoro Vergilio (1470-1555) was first published in Venice in 1498. Already during the author's lifetime it became highly popular, was reprinted numerous times and translated into other languages. However, the present edition, published by Jean Frellon in Lyon, is not listed in the relevant bibliographies, not even by Ferguson, who lists 28 Latin editions before 1560. - Due to its critical approach to religion, the work was included in the first Roman 'Index' (Index Avctorvm, Et Libroru(m), qui ab Officio Sanctae Rom ..., 1559, fol. Pr.) in 1559, which is why the present is the last uncensored edition. - With numerous marginalia and underlinings, as well as annotations on front paste-down and front fly leaf recto (mentioning the indexing by Rome) by various old hands. Title page with handwritten notes from 3 previous owners, one of which has been deleted. Slight water-staining in places and occasionaly small ink stains, also at the edges, otherwise a solid copy.
