Luxuriöse illustrierte Ausgabe der erstmals 1874 erschienenen Novellensammlung von Jules Amédée Barbey d'Aurevilly (1808-89). "Blendener Geist, vollendete Ritterlichkeit, verblüffend viel psychologische Beobachtung, eine entzückende Art zu plaudern, eine robuste Freude am Derb-Sinnlichen, Erotisch-Mysteriösen und Perversen zeichnen sein Werk aus." (Zit. Englisch S. 522) - Zeichnung vom Künstler signiert und bezeichnet, ebenso das lithographierte Frontispiz im Stein, alle Radierungen in der Platte signiert. Eine der Radierungen je in den beiden Bänden eingebundenen Subkriptionsanzeigen wiederholt, die Anzeigen je einmal auf Vélin und Japan. - Einige Blätter im Falz gering sporfleckig, an wenigen Stellen minimal fleckig, die unbeschnittenen Ränder des Seiten- und Fußstegs etwas angestaubt. Insgesamt sehr sauberes, höchst sammelswertes Exemplar, die Radierungen von kräftigem Strich und satter Schwärze.

Modern Literature and Art – One of 120 copies on vellum with the triple suite of etchings, our copy additionally enriched with an original drawing and extra lithograph by the artist. - For references see above. - With original drawing, etched portrait and 37 etchings, of which 20 are full-paged on plates and 17, often of large size, are in the text, plus 2 extra suites (coloured and black and white respectively) with 76 (38 each) etched plates, each with several remarques, 1 additional etched plate in coloured state, and finally 8 other etched plates ('planches inutilisées non mises dans le commerce') in various states, each with several remarques. - Luxurious illustrated edition of novellas by Jules Amédée Barbey d'Aurevilly (1808-89), first published in 1874. 'A dazzling mind, consummate chivalry, astonishing psychological observation, a delightful way of chatting, a robust delight in the bawdy-sensual, the erotic-mysterious and the perverse characterise his work.' (Cf. English, p. 522) - Drawing in vol. 2 signed and inscribed by the artist, as are the lithographed frontispiece in vol. 1, as well as all etchings signed in the plate. One of the etchings repeats the subscription leaflets bound in both volumes, those printed once on vellum and once on Japanese paper. - Some leaves slightly foxed in the fold, minimally soiled in a few places, the untrimmed edges of the side and bottom margins slightly dusty. Overall a very clean, highly collectible copy, the etchings with strong lines and rich blackness.
