Modern Literature and Art – With numerous, mostly full-page and often coloured lithographic and offset lithographic illustrations, 13 of which are on plates. - Particularly rare English language edition (with a print run three times smaller than the Russian original) of the first monograph on "The Master of the Soviet Empire Style" (Ephros), Sergey V. Chekhonin, graphic artist, book and porcelain designer Sergei V. Chekhonin (1878-1936). The volume contains the mentioned essay by the art and literary critic Abram Ephros, a friend and patron of the early Chagall, and furthermore 'On the Art of S. V. Chekhonin' by the art writer and museum curator Nikolai Punin, Anna Akhmatova's partner, who later fell out of favour with Stalin. - This English edition, limited to 1000 copies, contains numerous high-quality reproductions (including colour lithographs and colour offsets) of Chekhonin's works, including designs for book covers, posters, commercial prints and, above all, designs for plates etc. for the Soviet State Porcelain Factory, of which Chekhonin was the artistic director in the 1920s. - Some layers loose, paper slightly browned, otherwise a well-preserved copy of this impressive, splendidly illustrated showcase of the commercial art of the 'Soviet Empire'. - Enclosed: 4 Soviet and Russian works of literature, for details and references see above.
