Der geschäftstüchtige Stuttgarter Verleger Friedrich Arnold Brockhaus erwarb 1821 Casanovas Originalmanuskript und veröffentlichte von 1822 bis 1828 eine von Christian Wilhelm von Schütz veranstaltete deutsche Übersetzung. Der Erfolg war so groß, dass zwischen 1825 und 1828 in Paris eine von Victor Tournachon-Molin verlegte, schlampige Rückübersetzung als Raubdruck erschien. Zwischenzeitlich hatte sich Brockhaus mit Pariser Verlegern zusammengeschlossen und den in Dresden lebenden frazösischen Gelehrten Jean Laforgue beauftragt, die Handschrift der "Memoiren" zu lesen, für vorliegende Ausgabe zu überarbeiten und nach Belieben zu kürzen. Laforgue modernisierte dabei nicht nur die Rechtschreibung von Wörtern und Substantiven, sondern schrieb auch den größten Teil des Originaltextes in ein seiner Meinung nach besseres Französisch um. Außerdem schwächte er Passagen ab, die er als zügellos empfand, oder schrieb im Gegenteil solche um, die er für zu elliptisch hielt. Darüber hinaus fügte er dem Text ganze Passagen hinzu oder strich sie, je nach seiner eigenen Überzeugung. Er beurteilte Casanovas Originaltext als zu wohlwollend gegenüber dem Christentum und dem Ancien Régime und als zu feindselig gegenüber der Französischen Revolution und der Demokratie. Provenienz: Wihelm Katzenstein, mit dessen illustriertem lithographischem Ex Libris um 1900 auf den Vorderspiegeln aller Bände. - Durchgehend und mitunter stärker stockfleckig, vereinzelt mit Tintenflecken, insgesamt von guter Erhaltung.

In 1821 the Stuttgart publisher Friedrich Arnold Brockhaus acquired Casanova's original manuscript and commissioned a German translation executed by Christian Wilhelm von Schütz, which was published in 1822 and 1828. The success was tremendous, which is why between 1825 and 1828 a sloppy retranslation appeared in Paris, published illegally by Victor Tournachon-Molin. Meanwhile Brockhaus had joined forces with Parisian publishers and commissioned Jean Laforgue to read the manuscript of the 'Memoirs', revise it for the present edition and shorten it as he saw fit. Laforgue not only modernised the spelling of words and nouns, but also rewrote most of the original text in what he considered to be better French. He also toned down passages that he found excessive or, conversely, rewrote those that he considered too elliptical. - In addition, he added entire passages to the text or deleted them, depending on his own convictions. He considered Casanova's original text to be too benevolent towards Christianity and the Ancien Régime and too hostile towards the French Revolution and democracy. - Throughout and occasionally with more severe foxing, isolated ink stains, overall in good condition.
