Geographie und Reisen – Erste Ausgabe dieser Übersetzung. - Sabin 91300 - Palau 322328 - John L. Stephens legte durch seine Entdeckungen den Grundstein der modernen Maya-Forschung. 1839 wurde er als Botschafter der USA in die Zentralamerikanische Konföderation nach Guatemala-Stadt entsandt. Er nutzte einen großen Teil seiner Zeit für ausgedehnte Entdeckungsreisen, die er zusammen mit dem Architekten Frederick Catherwood (1799-1854) unternahm. Stephens beschrieb u. kartierte die Funde lebendig u. genau, während Catherwood die Texte mit detailgetreuen Zeichnungen illustrierte. Catherwoods filigrane Zeichnungen und Stephens lebhafter, stellenweise sehr amüsanter Bericht über die Entdeckungen, den Alltag der Menschen und die Abenteuer dieser wahren Odyssee durch Gebirge, Urwälder und Revolutionen wurde 1841 zu einem Weltbestseller. - Teils etwas (meist Karte u. Tafeln) braunfleckig, insgesamt gutes Exemplar.

Stephens laid the foundation for modern Maya research through his discoveries. In 1839, he was sent to Guatemala City as the US ambassador to the Central American Confederation. He spent much of his time on extensive expeditions, which he undertook together with the architect Frederick Catherwood (1799-1854). Stephens vividly and accurately described and mapped the finds, while Catherwood illustrated the texts with detailed drawings. Catherwood's delicate drawings and Stephens' lively, sometimes very amusing account of the discoveries, the everyday life of the people, and the adventures of this true odyssey through mountains, jungles, and revolutions became a worldwide bestseller in 1841. - Somewhat brown-stained in places (mostly maps and plates), overall a good copy.
