Hartmann war der wissenschaftliche Betreuer der Expedition, in deren Verlauf Barnim starb. H. "hat sehr reiches Material zurückgebracht und sich gründlicher als viele andere mit dem Charakter des Landes und der Bewohner vertraut gemacht" (Petermann, Mitt. 1864 S. 194). - Die Reise führte zur Entdeckung von 159 Pflanzenarten, die G. Schweinfurth beschrieben hat. - Der Anhang u.a. mit ethnologischen, geologischen und sprachgeschichtl. Studien (arab. Glossar) sowie einer Musikbeilage. - Titel gebräunt, teils stockfleckig.
