Technik – Erste und einzige Separatausgabe des polyglotten nautischen Wörterbuchs. - Nicht bei Jahn, F. Bibliographie der k.k./k.u.k. Marine. - Pomba, G., Ed. Catalogo della libreria di Giuseppe Pomba, 1852, S. 88. - Cantù, I. L'Italia scientifica contemporanea, 1844, S. 48. - Von großer Seltenheit im Handel und in institutionellen Beständen, für uns auf Auktionen nicht nachweisbar. - Gaspare Tonello (1797-1849), Professor für Schiffsbau an der Österreichischen Akademie für Nautik in Triest, verfasste u.a. eine Abhandlung über die Navigation (1827) und die umfassenden "Lezione intorno alla marina" veröffentlicht, die zwischen 1829 und 1832 in 4 Bänden bei Alvisopoli in Venedig erschienen. Der Schlussband des letztgenannten Werks enthielt ein polyglottes nautisches Wörterbuch, dessen erste und einzige, drei Jahre danach erschienenen Separatausgabe hier vorliegt. - In seinem Vorwort verweist der Autor auf die Wörterbücher von Röding, Neuman, Romme und Lescallier als Quellen für seine Kompilation. Das Wörterbuch besteht aus etwa 500 Einträgen in italienischer Sprache mit ihren französischen, englischen und deutschen Entsprechungen sowie erläuternden Anmerkungen. - Die Kupfer zeigen detailgenaue Abbildungen verschiedener zu bennenender Bau- und Bestandteile von Schiffen. - Es fehlt das Vortitelbl. Rücken mit einer Fehlstelle im oberen Bereich, die zu einem Riss im Gelenk vor der 2. Lage führt, Einband leicht berieben, einige Seiten leicht stockfleckig, die lose beiligenden Tafeln in den Rändern teilweise mit kleinen Läsuren und gebräunt, Tafel Nr. II am linken unteren Rand beschnitten, deshalb mit kleinem Druckverlust. Insgesamt ein solides Exemplar des Rarissimums, vollständig mit den kräftig und klar gestochenen Tafeln.

Technique – With 2 folding copper engraved plates (losely attached) depicting 48 detailed illustrations. - For refernces see above. - First and only separate edition of this multilingual dictionary of nautical terms, particularly rare in the trade and institutions alike. Not traceable for us at auctions. - Gaspare Tonello (1797-1849), a professor for naval architecture at the Austrian Academy for Nautics in Trieste, author of an account on navigation (1827) and the comprehensive "Lezione intorno alla marina", which was published in 4 volumes by Alvisopoli in Venice between 1829 and 1863. The last volume of the latter work also contained a nautical polyglot dictionary, whose first and only separate edition is the present volume. - In his preface the author refers to the dictionaries of Röding, Neuman, Romme and Lescallier as sources for his compilation. The work consists of around 500 entries in Italian, with their French, English and German equivalents as well as explanatory notes. - The copper plates show detailed illustrations of various parts and components of ships. - Pre-title page is missing. Spine with a loss in the upper area, which leads to a tear in the joint before the 2nd quire, binding slightly worn, some pages slightly foxed, the plates partly with small tears and shelf-wear at margins, the 2nd plate trimmed at the lower left margin, therefore with a small loss of print. Overall a solid copy of this truly scarce item, complete with clearly engraved plates.
