Zoologie - Herpetologie - Amphibien

Naturwissenschaften – Schlegels äußerst seltene handkolorierte Amphibien und Reptilien in Folio. - Nissen 3680. - Adler I, 30f. - The Herpetological Libray of Adrian Crane, AC23. - Catalogue of the library of the Zoological Society of London, 4. Aufl. (1887), S. 349.

Natural Sciences – Zoology.- Herpetology. - Amphibian. - Schlegel's exceptional and extremely rare lithographic folio plates of amphibians and reptiles. Bound in neat modern half leather with gilt illustrated spine incorporing a snake motif. - The plates depict amphibians and reptiles mainly from the former Dutch East Indies (Indonesia), some of which also show previously unknown species. - The lithographed calligraphic title page is missing. Without the separately published octavo text volume with descriptions of the animals depicted. - The drawings were created 'under the auspices of Reinwardt, Kuhl and van Hasselt, Boie and Macklot' and were 'coloured after living specimens' (from the foreword to the text volume). - Some plates with heavier trimming of the top margin, in a few cases with minimal loss of numbering. The plates are slightly browned and have some light finger stains on the edges, but overall this is a well-preserved copy in a neat binding, with the colouring of the high-contrast, clean lithographed plates displaying a vibrant freshness.
