Wilkinson (Iberian Books) 2106. - Der vorliegende Band enthält frühe spanische Übersetzungen von "Stimulus Amoris" und "Soliloquium de quatuor mentalibus exercitiis", zwei dem Hl. Bonaventura (d.h. Giovanni Fidanza, 1221-74) zugeschriebene Andachtsschriften. Bonaventura, Kardinal und Oberhaupt der Minoriten, zählt zu den einflussreichsten Theologen und Philosophen des Mittelalters. - Die beiden Bände des vorliegenden Sammelbandes wurden in den Offizinen von Miguel de Eguía (1495-1546) in Logroño und Alcalá gedruckt, einem der wegweisenden spanischen Drucker seiner Zeit und Verleger von Eramus. Eguías Drucke sind bekannt für ihren ausgeprägten Schriftsatz in puristischen Schriften, ihre illustrativen und ornamentalen Holzschnittinitialen mit künstlerischem Charakter, die Verwendung roter und schwarzer Tinte und die gute Qualität des Papiers. Darüber hinaus war Eguía berühmt für die Erneuerung der spanischen Druckkunst durch die Verwendung von architektonischen Bordüren im Stil der Renaissance, wie die Titelblätter des vorliegenden Bandes hervorragend illustrierten: "Estimulo de Amor" besteht aus einem zentralen typografischen Titeldruck mit einer Reihe von emblematischen Illustrationen in Kombination mit floralen Ornamenten, "Soliloquio" enthält zusätzlich ein Porträt des lesenden Bonaventura. - Obwohl Inkunabeln und Frühdrucke von Bonaventuras Werken im lateinischen Original und in Übersetzung sowie Drucke des spanischen Meisterdruckers Eguía auf Auktionen nicht selten sind, können wir für die vorliegenden Ausgaben keinerlei Auktionsergebnisse nachweisen. Gemäß USTC, OCLC/WorldCat, KVK und viaLibri Library Search für (I) weltweit nur 6 Exemplare in institutionellen Beständen, hiervon nur eines außerhalb der iberischen Halbinsel. Von (II) sind nur 5 Exemplare bekannt, davon kein Exemplar außerhalb Spaniens. - Provenienz: Familie Harrach, österr. Uradel, mit deren (teils getilgtem) Löschstempel auf dem Titelblatt von (I) "Ex Bibliotheca Viennensi" und hs. Bibliothekssigle auf Bl. 1r. Ferdinand Bonaventura I. von Harrach (1637-1706) und sein Sohn Alois Graf Harrach (1669-1762) waren österr. Gesandte in Madrid. Zweiterer bekleidete zwischen 1728 und 1733 zudem das Amt des Vizekönigs im damals spanischen Königreich Neapel. In dieser Zeit bauten die Harrachs einen beträchtlichen Bestand an spanischen und italienischen Drucken des 16. u. 17 Jh. auf, der danach die Bibliothek des Wiener Harrachpalais bereichern sollte. (Vgl. Wurzbach VII (1861), S. 371-73.). - Es fehlt das letzte, weiße Blatt. Titelblatt mit verblasstem Besitzereintrag von alter Hand. Wenige Bll. mit sehr wenigen Unterstreichungen und Randnotizen. Einige Blätter mit leichten Stockflecken und kleinen Wasserflecken in den Rändern. Insgesamt äußerst wohlerhaltenes Exemplar dieses äußerst seltenen Zeugnisses früher spanischer Druckkunst.

Prints before 1600, Bibles, Classics in Original Languages – Of outstanding rarity, not traceable for us at auctions so far. - Sammelband with 2 early Spanish prints by Miguel de Eguía, containing works of Saint Bonaventure, bound in contemporary vellum with calligraphic title on spine and red coloured cut throughout (somewhat creased and spotted). - Each with illustrated and/or typographic wood-cut title, each title additionally framed in wood-cut borders on four sides. - The volume contains early Spanish translations of "Stimulus Amoris" and "Soliloquium de quatuor mentalibus exercitiis", two devotional writings written by or attributed to St Bonaventure (i.e. Giovanni Fidanza, 1221-74), one of the most influential theologians and philosophers of the Middle Ages. - The two vols. of the present Sammelband were printed by Miguel de Eguía (1495-1546) in Logroño and Alcalá, one of the most advanced Spanish printers of his time and publisher of Eramus. Eguía's prints are known for their distinctive typesetting in purist fonts, their illustrative and ornamental wood-cut initials with an artistic character. In addition, Eguía was famous for renewing the art of Spanish printing through the use of architectural borders in the style of the Renaissance. - Although incunabula and early prints of Bonaventura's works as well as prints by the Spanish master printer Eguía are frequently traded at auction, we could trace no auction result whatsovever for the present editions. According to USTC, OCLC/WorldCat, KVK and viaLibri Library Search, there are only 6 institutional holdings listed worldwide for (I), of which only one is outside the Iberian Peninsula. Only 5 copies of (II) are known, none of them outside Spain. - Provenance: Harrach family, Austrian aristocracy, with their (partly erased) ex-library stamp 'Ex Bibliotheca Viennensi' on title page of (I) and hand-written library number on leaf 1v. Ferdinand Bonaventura I Harrach (1637-1706) and his son Alois Count Harrach (1669-1762) were Austrian envoys in Madrid. The latter between 1728 and 1733 also held the office of viceroy in the then Spanish Kingdom of Naples. During this time, the Harrachs formed a considerable collection of Spanish and Italian prints from the 16th and 17th centuries, which would later enrich the library of the Harrach Palace in Vienna. (Cf. Wurzbach VII (1861), pp. 371-73.) - Missing rear fly-leaf. Title page (1) with old owner's remark. A few leaves with very few underlinings and marginal notes. Some leaves with light foxing and small water stains in margins. Altogether very well preserved copy of this rare document of early Spanish printing mastery.
