Naturwissenschaften – Zwei für das Verständnis der Ursprünge des Universums bedeutende Aufsätze Einsteins als erster Separatdruck bzw. erster Sonderabdruck. - Alicke 91. - Boni 108 u. 170. - Einstein Papers 7. - Shields/Schilpp 117 u. 212. - Weil 98 u. 156. - Pais, A.: Subtle is the Lord (Ausgabe 2005), S. 288. - 1. Einstein kritisiert hier De Sitters Gleichungen für Gravitationsfelder und liefert die erste richtige Definition einer Raum-Zeit-Singularität. "Einstein never said so explicitly, but it seems reasonable to assume that he had in mind that the correct equations should have no solutions at all in the absence of matter. However, right after his (Einstein's paper »Kosmologische Betrachtungen zur allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie", published mid February 2017) paper appeared, de Sitter did find a solution (...) Einstein must have been disappointed. In 1918 he looked for ways to rule out the de Sitter solution, but soon realised that there is nothing wrong with it." (Paise) - Trotz Einsteins Kritik war das De-Sitter-Modell bis in die 1930er Jahre das vorherrschende kosmologische Modell. Zu dieser Zeit schlugen Einstein und de Sitter gemeinsam ein "genau richtiges" kosmologisches Modell vor. Die große kosmologische Debatte zwischen Einstein und De Sitter markiert den Beginn des modernen wissenschaftlichen Verständnisses der Ursprünge des Universums.
Natural Sciences – A set of 1 first journal issue and 1 first offprint by Einstein on gravitation, electicity and the origin of the universe. - For references see above. - 1. Einstein here criticises De Sitter's equations for gravitational fields and provides the first proper definition of a space-time singularity. "Einstein never said so explicitly, but it seems reasonable to assume that he had in mind that the correct equations should have no solutions at all in the absence of matter. However, right after his (Einstein's paper »Kosmologische Betrachtungen zur allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie", published mid February 1917) paper appeared, de Sitter did find a solution (...) Einstein must have been disappointed. In 1918 he looked for ways to rule out the de Sitter solution, but soon realised that there is nothing wrong with it." (Paise) - Despite Einstein's critique, the De Sitter model was the dominant cosmological model until the 1930s, at which time Einstein and de Sitter together proposed a "just right" cosmological model. The great cosmological debate between Einstein and De Sitter marks the beginning of the modern scientific understanding of the origins of the universe. - 2. Kaluza "attempted to unify Einstein's theory of gravity with Maxwell's theory of light by mixing them in a fifth dimension". Together with the Swedish theoretical physicist Oskar Klein Kaluza produced the "Kaluza-Klein field equations" (Calaprice, Einstein Almanac, 135). Their insights, however, were "neglected for many years as attention was directed towards quantum mechanics. Their idea that fundamental forces can be explained by additional dimensions did not re-emerge until string theory was developed" (Wikipedia). - Wrappers of the journal issue margins minimally torn at margins, sheet with Einstein's contribution opened, thus cut slighly perforated, some pages minimally creased, otherwise crisp, partly unopened copy. The offprint minimally time-stained, otherwise mint.
