Scherrer 49. - Reich illustrierter Sammelband mit frühen Ausgaben der Hauptwerke von Niccolò Fontana Tartaglia (1499/1500-1557), einem bedeutenden venezianischen Mathematiker, Ingenieur, Übersetzer (von Archimedes und Euklid ins Italienische) und Autor wissenschaftlicher Werke. - (I) Die 2. Auflage von 1554 (1. Auflage 1546) seines bahnbrechenden Werks über die Mathematik und ihre technische Anwendung auf den Gebieten der militärischen Ballistik (insbesondere zur Berechnung von Kanonenflugbahnen), der Festungsbaukunst, der Statik und der topographischen Vermessung. Mit der oft fehlenden Klappe (mit der Darstellung einer Festungsmauer) zum Nachtrag, die an der Vorderkante von L. 71r befestigt ist. - (II) Die 3. Auflage von 1562 (1. Auflage 1554) von Tartaglias "Regola", einer besonders reich illustrierten Abhandlung über die Bergung gesunkener Schiffe, für die er sich auch in seiner Funktion als Buchhalter der Republik Venedig interessierte. Das Buch, das in Form von imaginären Dialogen zwischen Tartaglia und seinem Schüler Richard Wentworth verfasst ist, befasst sich auch mit dem Tiefseetauchen, der Meteorologie für die Seeschifffahrt und druckt Auszüge aus dem Traktat "De insidentibus aquae" von Archimedes, das Tartaglia nur 3 Jahre später vollständig übersetzt und auf Italienisch veröffentlicht hat. - (III) Die 4. Ausgabe von 1558 von Tartaglias Chef d'Ouvre "Nova Scientia" (erstmals 1537 veröffentlicht), der allerersten gedruckten Abhandlung über Ballistik und einem bahnbrechenden Werk über Bewegung im Allgemeinen, das zu den Entdeckungen von Galilei und anderen in diesem Bereich führte. Das Titelblatt der "Nova Scientia" besteht aus einer großen Holzschnittillustration mit dem Wappen von Francesco Maria II. della Rovere, Herzog von Urbino, und einer ganzseitigen allegorischen Darstellung, die den Autor inmitten der wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen (die alle weiblich sind) und umgeben von den großen Gelehrten der Antike wie Euklid, Aristoteles und Platon zeigt. Diese drei Traktate wurden wahrscheinlich vom venezianischen Drucker und Mitherausgeber Curzio Troiano Navò im Jahr 1562 zusammen herausgegeben, wobei er Blätter aus früheren Ausgaben von (I) und (II) verwendete, die ursprünglich von Niccolò de Bascarini gedruckt worden waren. - Mit gestoch. Exlibris mit dem Monogramm "F. C." auf dem vorderen Einbanddeckel., wenige Bll. mit alter Reparatur am Boden, einige Blätter mit Wasserflecken an den Rändern, gelegentlich etw. stockfleckig, (III) mit festem Buchbinderschnitt am unteren Rand, jedoch ohne Textverlust. Insgesamt ein wohlerhaltenes Exemplar dieses Sammelbandes von besonderer Bedeutung für die Geschichte der Mathematik und Militärtechnik.

With numerous woodcut illustrations, initials and diagrams, some full page and folded: Bound in 18th century marbled cardboard on 3 raised bands using two different paste papers, mounted label on spine and marbled edges on three sides (scuffed, rubbed and bumped, somewhat creased). - Richly illustrated anthology of early editions of the major works of Niccolò Fontana Tartaglia, an eminent Venetian mathematician, engineer, translator (of Archimedes and Euclid into Italian) and author of scientific works. - (I) The 2nd edition of 1554 (1st edition 1546) of his seminal work on mathematics and its technical application in the fields of military ballistics (especially for the calculation of cannon trajectories), fortification engineering, statics and topographical surveying. With the often missing flap (depicting a fortress wall). - (II) The 3rd edition of 1562 (1st edition 1554) of Tartaglia's "Regola", a particularly richly illustrated treatise on the salvage of sunken ships, in which he was also interested in his capacity as accountant to the Republic of Venice. - (III) The 4th edition of 1558 of Tartaglia's chef d'ouvre "Nova Scientia" (first published in 1537), the very first printed treatise on ballistics and a seminal work on motion in general that led to the discoveries of Galileo and others in the field. - With engraved. bookplate with the monogram "F. C." on the front cover, a few p. with old repair at the bottom, some leaves with waterstains at the margins, occasionally some foxing, (III) with tight binder's cut at the lower margin, but without loss of text. Overall a well-preserved copy of this anthology of special importance for the history of mathematics and military technology.
