Naturwissenschaften – Siwell/Blunt, 107-108. - Dunthorne, 205. - Great Flower Books, 119. - Der dritte Band der "Histoire générale des insectes" in der kombinierten Ausgabe von Maria Sibylla Merian und Daniel Rabel enthält das Werk "Theatrum Florae" von Daniel Rabel, das erstmals 1622 in Paris erschien und in dieser Edition als "Des Plantes Bulbeuses, Liliacées, Carophyllées" bezeichnet wird. Der Band umfasst 69 großformatige, kolorierte Tafeln, die Pflanzen wie Tulpen, Lilien, Narzissen, Hyazinthen, Krokusse, Zeitlose, Iris, Anemonen und Nelken zeigen. Die Darstellungen sind nach der Natur gezeichnet und in dieser Ausgabe in Paralleltexten Französisch und Latein erklärt. In einigen Illustrationen erscheinen auch kleine Schmetterlinge und Insekten neben den Pflanze. Daniel Rabels "Theatrum Florae" gilt als ein bedeutendes florales Tafelwerk des 17. Jahrhunderts und hebt sich dadurch hervor, dass die Blumen detailreich, naturalistisch und oft einzeln, manchmal mit Insekten, auf großem Format dargestellt werden. Die Ausgabe in der Merian-Rabel-Gesamtausgabe ist zudem die vierte, erstmals kolorierte Fassung mit erklärendem Text, was sie besonders selten und wertvoll macht. Zusammengefasst umschließt der dritte Band prachtvoll kolorierte, botanische Tafeln zu Zwiebel-, Lilien- und Nelkengewächsen von Rabel, die einen floralen Akzent zum entomologischen Schwerpunkt der Merian-Bände setzen. In der Merian-Ausgabe sind die Tafeln im Gegensatz zu vielen älteren Rabel-Ausgaben komplett von Hand koloriert und werden von erläuternden, parallel geführten Texten in Französisch und Latein begleitet. Frühere Ausgaben von Rabels "Theatrum Florae" erschienen meist unkoloriert und beinhalten oft keinen oder nur sehr knappen Text. In der Merian-Ausgabe finden sich bei einigen Tafeln zusätzlich kleine Insekten oder Schmetterlinge neben den Blüten, was als bewusste Verknüpfung zum entomologischen Hauptthema des Gesamtwerks gelesen werden kann. In klassischen Ausgaben von Rabels "Theatrum Florae" finden sich solche Verbindungen kaum. Die Merian/Rabel-Ausgabe, erschienen um 1771, wurde im Zuge der großen Gesamtausgabe mit den Merian-Bänden von den Pariser Verlegern überarbeitet und erweitert. - Wenige Bll. etwas braunfleckig, wenige Bll. mit kleineren Wasserflecken am Rand. Insgesamt gutes Exemplar der seltenen Ausgabe.

The third volume of the "Histoire générale des insectes" in the combined edition by Maria Sibylla Merian and Daniel Rabel contains Daniel Rabel's work "Theatrum Florae," which was first published in Paris in 1622 and is referred to in this edition as "Des Plantes Bulbeuses, Liliacées, Carophyllées." The volume comprises 69 large-format, colored plates depicting plants such as tulips, lilies, daffodils, hyacinths, crocuses, colchicum, irises, anemones, and carnations. The illustrations are drawn from nature and explained in parallel texts in French and Latin in this edition. In some illustrations, small butterflies and insects also appear alongside the plants. Daniel Rabel's "Theatrum Florae" is considered an important floral illustrated work of the 17th century and stands out for its detailed, naturalistic depictions of flowers, often individually and sometimes with insects, in large format. The edition in the Merian-Rabel Complete Edition is also the fourth, first colored version with explanatory text, which makes it particularly rare and valuable. In summary, the third volume contains magnificently colored botanical plates of bulbous, lily, and carnation plants by Rabel, which add a floral accent to the entomological focus of the Merian volumes. In contrast to many older editions of Rabel's work, the plates in the Merian edition are completely hand-colored and accompanied by explanatory texts in French and Latin. Earlier editions of Rabel's "Theatrum Florae" were mostly uncolored and often contained little or no text. In the Merian edition, some plates also feature small insects or butterflies alongside the flowers, which can be interpreted as a deliberate link to the main entomological theme of the entire work. Such connections are rarely found in classic editions of Rabel's "Theatrum Florae." The Merian/Rabel edition, published around 1771, was revised and expanded by Parisian publishers as part of the large complete edition with the Merian volumes. - A few pages with some brown spots, a few pages with minor water stains on the edges. Overall, a good copy of this rare edition.
