Astronomie

Naturwissenschaften – Zweite Auflage und erste Auflage von Keplers Widerlegung von Robert Fludd, jedoch ohne die berühmte Tafel mit den platonischen Körpern. - Houzeau und Lancaster 2841 - Caspar 67-68. Provenienz: Macclesfield Library. - Als das Mysterium Cosmographicum 1596 erstmals veröffentlicht wurde, "war es die erste unverhohlene kopernikanische Abhandlung seit De Revolutionibus selbst ... Kepler argumentierte, dass die Zentralität der Sonne von wesentlicher Bedeutung sei, da die Sonne selbst die treibende Kraft liefern müsse, um die Planeten in Bewegung zu halten ... Obwohl die Grundidee des Mysterium Cosmographicum falsch war, etablierte sich Kepler als der erste und bis zu Descartes einzige Wissenschaftler, der physikalische Erklärungen für Himmelsphänomene forderte. Selten in der Geschichte war ein so falsches Buch so wegweisend für die zukünftige Entwicklung der Wissenschaft" (DSB). Diese zweite Auflage wurde um zwei weitere Jahrzehnte von Keplers Denken erheblich erweitert. Die Anmerkungen und Ergänzungen des Autors zu dieser zweiten Auflage machen fast die Hälfte des Textes der ersten Auflage aus. Robert Fludd und Kepler waren sich uneinig über diesen neuen, quantitativen Ansatz zur Natur, der im Gegensatz zu Fludds symbolischer und alchemistischer Tradition stand. Kepler hatte in seinem Anhang zu Harmonices mundi auf Fludds Werk Bezug genommen, und Fludd - irritiert über Keplers kurze und eher abweisende Behandlung - antwortete mit einem ganzen Buch, dem Veritas Proscenium (1621). Laut Caspar versprach Kepler seinem Verleger im Juni 1621, dass er auf Fludds "albernes Buch" antworten würde, und löste sein Versprechen noch im selben Sommer ein. Obwohl Tampach diese beiden Werke zusammen veröffentlichte, betrachtet Caspar sie als voneinander getrennt und geht davon aus, dass der zweite Titel wahrscheinlich nachträglich hinzugefügt wurde. Der Inhalt ist völlig unterschiedlich. - Gebräunt bzw. teils etwas braunfleckig, Vorsatz mit handschriftlichen Tintennotizen (Skala der Relatio 144), diese könnten von John Collins, William Jones oder Newton (?) stammen. - Aus der Macclesfield Library mit ihren Blindstempeln.

A few ink notes at the beginning (Scale of relatio 144) could be in John Collins, William Jones or Newtons (?) handwriting. 2 parts in one. - Frankfurt: Erasmus Kempfer for Godefrid Tampach, 1621 (- 1622) Folio (290 x 186mm.), 8, 114, 119-163, 1 (blank), 50 pp., with separate title-page for the Apologia, woodcut initials and headpieces, woodcut diagrams, 4 folding woodcut plates, woodcut device on second title-page. Missing (!) the famous engraved folding plate with the platonic bodies. Contemporary speckled calf, spine gilt in compartments, some browning, extremities and joints rubbed. - When first published in 1596 Mysterium Cosmographicum "was the first unabashedly Copernican treatise since De Revolutionibus itself ... Kepler argued that the sun's centrality was essential, for the sun itself must provide the driving force to keep the planets in motion ... although the principal idea of the Mysterium Cosmographicum was erroneous, Kepler established himself as the first, and until Descartes the only, scientist to demand physical explanations for celestial phenomena. Seldom in history has so wrong a book been so seminal in directing the future course of science" (DSB). - Browned or partially brown-spotted, from Macclesfield Library with its blind stamps.
