Wintermärchen. 1909. Radierung und Aquatinta auf Velin. 32 x 23 cm (50 x 40,5 cm). Signiert. Unter Passeparout montiert. Blatt altersbedingt gebräunt und partiell leicht fleckig, auch verso. Insgesamt sehr gut mit nuanciertem, gratigem Druck.

Jahrhundertwende – Rief 45. - Die uns vorliegende Radierung von Heinrich Vogeler zählt zu dessen bedeutendsten graphischen Arbeiten und markiert eine Phase, in der sich der Künstler verstärkt symbolistischen und erzählerischen Themen widmete. Die Arbeit zeigt eine stille Winterlandschaft, in der vier Figuren - zwei davon in prächtiger Kleidung - unter einem hell leuchtenden Stern unterwegs sind. Die Szene verweist ikonografisch auf die Heiligen Drei Könige und verbindet religiöse Anspielungen mit der charakteristischen norddeutschen Landschaft, wo der Künstler beheimatet war.

Overall very good. - Rief 45. - This etching by Heinrich Vogeler is one of his most important graphic works and marks a phase in which the artist devoted himself increasingly to symbolist and narrative themes. The work shows a quiet winter landscape in which four figures - two of them in splendid clothing - are travelling under a brightly shining star. The scene refers iconographically to the Three Wise Men and combines religious allusions with the characteristic northern German landscape where the artist was at home.
