Lot 153 Joseph Beuys. Gletscher Schwamm Totenbett. …
Gletscher Schwamm Totenbett. 1979.
Fluxus – Heliogravure on Fabriano laid paper (with watermark). Signed and numbered. - Some heavy rubbing verso in the upper part of the sheet. Isolated small, barely visible creases and pinpoint stains. Otherwise very good with brilliant impression, the colour rich and opaque. - Schellmann 308. - One of 75 copies. - In this work, Joseph Beuys combines three central concepts of his symbolic language: "glacier" stands for natural processes and temporality, "sponge" symbolises absorption capacity and transformation, while "deathbed" refers to finiteness and transition. In his typical, brittle and almost meditative visual language - which suggests rather than illustrates through blank spaces - Beuys combines the reproducibility of heliogravure with personal interventions in the form of pencil drawings. This creates the "activation" of the sheet in Beuys's sense in the form of an exciting interplay between mechanical reproduction and individual handwriting.
