Die Narren beschwerung. Ein gar sehr nutzliches /kurtzweyliges unnd lustiges Büchlin (...). Mit Titelholzschnitt u. 96 Textholzschnitten. Strassburg, J. Knobloch d. J., 1558. CLXXVII, 2 Bll. 8°. Spät. Pgt. mit reicher floraler und ornamentaler Goldprägung. u. Schließbändern (Rücken minimal fleckig, VDeckel leicht aufgebogen).

Alte Drucke, Bibeln, Klassische Autoren in den Originalsprachen – VD16 M 7045 (nicht in der BSB) - STC 637 - Ritter 1619 - Müller 342, 71 - Goedeke II, 464, 18 (unter Wickram). - Äußerst selten, laut Worldcat u. KVK nur ein Exemplar weltweit (British Library), zudem 1 Ex. in der SBB Berlin (Sign. Yg 6444) nachweisbar (Digitalisat VD16). - Vierte und zugleich die zweite von Wickram bearbeitete und erweiterte Ausgabe. Die Erstausgabe erschien 1512 in Strassburg, die zweite 1518. Die erste von Wickram neu bearbeitete erschien 1556. Die vorliegenden schönen Holzschnitte gehen zum Teil auf Brants Narrenschiff zurück, zum Teil sind sie der Erstausgabe von 1512 entnommen, einige mit dem Monogramm von Urs Graf (Hollstein XI, 268-286 schreibt Graf insgesamt 19 Holzschnitte in der Erstausgabe zu). Wie Sebastian Brant in seinem "Narrenschiff", greift auch Murner die Kardinalssunden des Mittelalters an: Wollust, Vollerei, Hoffart, Geiz, Neid, Zorn und Faulheit. Jedem Gedicht (Kapitel) wird eine volkstümliche Redensart vorangestellt, die von einem Holzschnitt illustriert wird, es folgt ein zusammenfassender Vierzeiler. "Die trotz vieler motivischer und kompositorischer Anleihen aus dem 'Narrenschiff' durchaus selbständige 'Narenbeschwerung' (auch in der Schärfe ihrer Kritik, die kein Tabu zu kennen scheint, geht sie weit uber Brant hinaus) erweist sich gegenüber der kunstvollen Kompilation Brants als das Werk eines viel originäreren Autors" (vgl. Kindler). - Papierbedingt gebräunt, jedoch nahezu fleckenfrei, untere Ecke des Titels alt ergänzt (Text u. Motiv nicht betroffen), Vorsätze wohl alterneuert. Insgesamt sehr gut erhaltenes Exemplar dieser seltenen Ausgabe mit durchweg prachtvollen Holzschnittillustrationen im dekorativen Einband.

Prints before 1600, Bibles, Classics in Original Languages – With woodcut title and 96 woodcuts. Later vellum binding with rich floral and ornamental gilt embossing and ribbon ties (spine minimally stained, front cover slightly bent). - Exceptionally rare, according to Worldcat and KVK only one copy worldwide (British Library), also 1 copy in the SBB Berlin (digitalised VD16). - Fourth and also the second edition edited and expanded by Wickram. The first edition was published in Strasbourg in 1512, the second in 1518. The first edition, newly edited by Wickram, was published in 1556. Some of the beautiful woodcuts in this edition are based on Brant's "Narrenschiff", others are taken from the first edition of 1512, some with the monogram of Urs Graf (Hollstein XI, 268-286 attributes a total of 19 woodcuts in the first edition to Graf). - Due to paper browned, but almost stain-free, the lower corner of the title has been replaced (text and motif not affected), endpapers presumably renewed. Overall a very well-preserved copy of this rare edition with splendid woodcut llustrations throughout in decorative binding.
