Moderne Litertur und Kunst - Französische Bibliophilie – Monod 11489. - Künstlerexemplar (exemplaire réservé à l'Artiste) außerhalb der Auflage von 240, als solches im Druck bezeichnet. - Eingebunden sind zwei Autographen: einer der französischen Malerin und Illustratoren des Werks Hermine David (1886-1970), Urenkelin des Meisters Jacques-Louis David und Ehefrau des Künstlers Jules Pascin, an Monsieur und Madame Varin, datiert 1955. Eine weitere Widmung der Malerin belegt, dass es sich bei dem Buch um ein Geschenk an Monsieur Varin handelt, in Anerkennung seiner freundschaftlichen Dienste in London. Der zweite Brief stammt aus der Feder der Autorin des vorliegenden Werks, Mary Webb, und ist adressiert an eine Mrs. Drage. - Der wundervoll poetische Einband evoziert das Schilf im Teich von Sarn und stellt einen direkten Bezug zum Werk her. Er stammt von der Pariser Buchhändlerin, Galeristin und Verlegerin Lucie Weill. In den 1930er-Jahren gründete sie die beiden Galerien Au Pont des Arts und Lucie Weill & Seligmann, welche sich als eine der wichtigsten Anlaufstellen für moderne Kunst im 20. Jahrhundert etablierten. Bis 1978 war sie außerdem als Buchbinderin tätig. - Unikatäres Exemplar in prachtvollem Einband.

Splendid dark green full marocco with japonising floral motifs in marquetry and rich gold and silver embossing, gilt spine title, gilt edges, brown suede endpapers. In half morocco chemise with gilt spine title, half morocco slipcase and further half cloth slipcase with gilt spine label (this with slight defects). Signed: Lucie Weill. - Artist's copy (exemplaire réservé à l'Artiste) outside the edition of 240, designated as such in the print. - Two autograph letters are bound in: one from the French painter and illustrator of the work Hermine David (1886-1970), great-granddaughter of the master Jacques-Louis David and wife of the artist Jules Pascin, to Monsieur and Madame Varin, dated 1955. A further dedication from the artist confirms that the book is a gift to Monsieur Varin in recognition of his friendly services in London. The second letter was penned by the author of the present work, Mary Webb, and is addressed to a Mrs Drage.- The marvellously poetic cover evokes the reeds in the pond at Sarn and makes a direct reference to the work. It was designed by the Parisian bookseller, gallery owner and publisher Lucie Weill. In the 1930s, she founded the two galleries Au Pont des Arts and Lucie Weill & Seligmann, which established themselves as one of the most important centres for modern art in the 20th century. She also worked as a bookbinder until 1978. - Unique copy in a splendid binding.
